Sampling of comments
The following are some of the comments made on the forms. Comments which offered no constructive value have been omitted; comments or suggestions with a number in parantheses appeared that many times.
- Stick to the Schedule/Get up on time (5)
- Trust youth more and goons less.
- Pre-shopping briefing (when and what is flexible).
- Control early arrivals. Identify who is coming when with whom.
- Include adults on the duty roster, after all we make up more than half of the roster. Not that most didn't pitch in more than there share anyway, it would just be more defined and I believe would help build the group
- Ban all weapons, swords, clubs, etc. under penalty of removal from Winter Camp. (The homemade shield and 1x2 sword were fine)
- Have a place for people to hang out (3)
- I think maybe breakfasts should be served (no continental--it encourages sloth)
- Single cabin or similar.
- More youth input (of course we could always use more youth input.) This had to be one of the few camps I recall that some of the youth said "I wish we would have done or were doing 'x'." Maybe that will prompt more input and action?
- Remove the Candidte Lunch, we need more food
- I think we could go easier on lunches. It would not only be easier cooking but cheaper. Leftovers could be used to supplement any who felt they didn't get enough.
- Start plan in September or October, November is fine-tuning shake-down meeting.
- Meals were good (above average, actually..most were 7+ without being generous), but I think the 'leftovers' kinda killed part of the potential (esp. the Viking Feast which could have been awesome.)
- Collect more money
- I like how we had the 3 cabins so everybody wasn't sick of eachother by the end of camp and we all had a few more freedoms.
- Have the cooks also clean up dishes and kitchen after meals, rather another crew.
- I liked the 162 banquet and wouldn't have missed it. I was great to see the variety of things we produced and with very few exceptions they were excellent quality. That being said it was no fun to eat, who goes to a buffet intent on eating some of everything, my idea is to select a few of my favorites and enjoy it. As it turned out I and in fact all could have probably done that as most dishes looked like a mouse nibbled on them. In any event, I don't think I'll have to worry about it much as the cost and work expended will not soon be forgotten.
- I was sorry we missed the Viking Outdoor Feast as it would have been an individual challange to cook on a real fire in winter.
- Don't rely on trading post.
- Establish youth leadership team with advisers.
- Daily meeting of leaders (maybe everyone) at camp.
The following activities, meals and or themes were suggested. Where available, details have been provided.
- Winter Camping as theme (2)
- Don't know..maybe a CTO variant...something that last quite long maybe overnight?
- Would like to do the hooters meal again.
- man hunt
- spy games or war games as theme
- Winter Camping skills.
- Some outdoor cooking.
- Pizza=Fun Day, the city thing Clark suggested might be cool
- In line with the themes, perhaps a spicy meal,
- Tour of America as theme
- Maybe some type of campfire activities, it always seams strange to me that the BSA Honor Campers never have campfires.
- Midevil theme
- More pleasure hiking (not perimeter hike), sledding, etc.
- Night outdoor activity (at least one)
- Random rotating bunk assignments, selected by computer. It could be just one night, mid-week or every night and could even include a night each outside.
- Slay the Dragon
- Actually have a Viking feast with a rotissery pig.
- Something along the lines of the 13th warrior as a theme
The following were identified as things we shouldn't change
- Location (5)
- I don't think there is anything we shouldn't consider....I think we are borderline to being too predictable.
- Cross country golf
- the magic of wintercamp
- The Hooters dinner.
