Current Entry: Kickball
One of Winter Camp's most memorable athletic events debuted at Winter Camp VIII and came about rather accidentally. Softball was scheduled for a third straight year, but the uncooperative weather (with a steady rain falling) suggested that an event closer to the cabins might be safer and more pleasant than one held at the Ordeal site. As a soccer ball was already on-site, kickball was proposed by some anonymous innovator. The game was a huge success from the first inning. Although mud covered the playing field, players reached new extremes of delight as they eagerly slid through mud to reach the various bases. A new tradition was born in their wake.
The record score was notched the next year, when the Geeks trounced the Howiettes 32-6. At Winter Camp XII, new lights outside Clearwater cabin provided the illumination for the first night game in Winter Camp Kickball League history. Winter Camp XV saw kickball innovation move to a new level of creativity when the game was played on the surface of Beaver Lake. No one who took part in this groundbreaker will soon forget the spectacle of kickball at night (kickoff at 10 P.M. WCST) on the frozen surface of Beaver Lake, with ceremonial candles marking the bases. No one will forget the players sliding into bases and extinguishing candles in a spray of slush and snow, either.
