Current Entry: Hydrogen Ballooning
This excursion into pyrotechnical chemistry was led by Paul Kupser at Winter Camp XXI. In an effort to generate a cool-looking explosion and simulate a UFO during the Area 51 events, it was proposed to fill a garbage bag with hydrogen, attach a fuse, ignite it, and release the makeshift balloon so that a fireball could be enjoyed. However, despite Paul's careful mixing of calcium hydride and water in accordance with the standard chemical equation CaH2 + 2H2O ? 2H2 ? + Ca(OH)2, none of the four bags successfully ignited within visual range.
