Oddly for most camping trips, but completely in character for Winter Camp, the simple act of shopping for food has collected its own set of traditions. Winter Camp's shopping crew assembles each Christmas Eve for its work, and customarily begins by visiting a warehouse store (most recently Sam's Club on Northline in Southgate) for large-quantity items. For many years, the trip then moved to a conventional grocery store (usually Meijer's on Eureka in Taylor) for those items which are needed in smaller quantities. Beginning in 2016, the second shopping trip was set for December 26 in Lapeer. This has made it much easier to store groceries between their purchase and the start of camp-there is no need for extensive parking lot discussions about what can freeze, what shouldn't freeze, and what can safely be left in a car or unheated garage.
Several campers have taken advantage of this visit to complete their personal holiday shopping. Lunch is always taken at a Wendy's, where it was long a tradition that the oldest shopper present purchase Frostys for the entire crew and that the youngest shopper retrieve them from the counter. The Frostys came from another source at Winter Camp XXII, when an anonymous donor mysteriously sent a round of Frostys to the Winter Camp tables. While much speculation as to the source of the desserts followed, nothing definitive was concluded until Occasional Visitor repeated the performance before Winter Camp XXIII and sent a "You're welcome." note to Jeff Rand in the Winter Camp XXIII hobby box. When OV revealed herself as Kristie Matz and joined the Winter Camp family by marrying Steve Donohue, she continued purchasing the Frostys for several years.
