Doug Wilson began writing a "Gadget of the Day" column in the Winter Camp News at Winter Camp XII. This column focused on some of the more interesting mechanical devices used at Winter Camp and by Winter Campers, both those commercially available and those built on-site. Its motto said it all: "The possibilities are limited only by our imagination". The column was renamed "Gadget Googolplex" during its last year of publication, at Winter Camp XIV.
