Certainly an important and popular part of any Winter Camp schedule, this source of unplanned activities was originally rationed out at the planning meeting. In addition to the customary voting circle which decides on activities, early planning meetings also undertook to decide, in a relatively democratic fashion, how many hours of free time should be incorporated into the schedule. The method was accumulative: each member in turn added a number of hours to the running total, such that dividing the total by the number of contributors at that point would give the actual amount of free time to be scheduled. Steve Donohue pointed out one year that this method essentially left the question of determining free time to the last voter, since subtraction from the total was never permitted. Winter Camp XXXVI saw the return of scheduled free time when a free afternoon, rather than a specified number of hours, was set for Day Three.
