Current Entry: Chapters
Winter Camp has always served basically the same Downriver area of southeast Michigan. Over the course of time, the chapter name and area has changed. In 1977, the first Winter Camp was held by Downriver chapter. In 1989, the lodge reorganized from 12 chapters down to 5 and Mahican chapter was born to serve Downriver, Sauk Trail, and Huron districts. That merger added Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and much of the southwest portion of Wayne County to the chapter area. Legend has it that a few years later when the council merged those same districts into a single district and they were searching for a name, Miles Church suggested the scouts had already selected Mahican; it is true that Mahican Chapter is older than Mahican district. Mahican chapter held Winter Camp until 2013 when they were merged with Wsigau chapter and took the "new" name Migisi Opawgan Chapter. The former Wsigau chapter included the Sunset district which includes much of the northwest portion of Wayne County. (SD, ER)
