Jeff Rand rescued cricket from the Dead List at the Winter Camp XXXIX planning meeting and took responsibility for organizing it at camp, and the first Winter Camp cricket game was held on Day Five. The field, near the Beaver Creek shower building, was far smaller than a regulation cricket ground, and so scoring was light. Equipment had to be improvised; while Steve Donohue ordered a cricket bat and ball from amazon.com, they were delivered to his home in Allen Park rather than to camp. A tennis ball and plywood bat were substituted. Timmy Kasprzak's team triumphed 33-20 over Tyler Fine's team, and Adam Lardin was awarded the game ball.
Winter Camp's second experiment with cricket, at Winter Camp XL, saw the game move to Clearwater Field, the equipment ordered in 2015 successfully make its way to camp, and a host of new rules introduced to assist in adapting the sport of the civilized gentleman into the sport of...well, Winter Campers. On the list of local rule variations are these:
- Three outs per side.
- The bowler need not bounce the ball on its way to the batter.
- Wickets replaced by a steel shovel blade.
- A one-batter penalty, served in the hockey manner by confinement to a penalty box (of sorts) for any defender who runs with the ball.
- (Added late) A six-run limit on any ball batted deeply into the woods. This rule is subject to deletion if we ever find a larger field.
Taken together, these rules led to a satisfactory second game, which was won 22-17 in two innings by the team led by the Rand Rocket. Timmy "Three Outs" Kasprzak failed in his effort to lead a team to a defense of his Winter Camp cricket title.
