Steve Donohue and Ethan Rein wrote an article for the Winter Camp XXXIX News proposing to reimagine the Hobby Draw by assigning a single hobby to all campers to be pursued as each man saw fit in 2016. The collected campers of Winter Camp XXXIX chose to go the "group hobby" route for 2016, but rather than adopt one of the suggestions put forth in the article, a faction led in part by Corey Sanborn proposed "Shenanigans" as the general theme for Winter Campers collective play during the lesser 72 weekettes of 2016. Upon careful questioning, Corey offered the phrase "Mischief, not trouble" as a guiding principle for members' actions in service of this theme. So it was that 2016 was set to be a year of practical jokes and general mirth on the part of everyone participating. A suggestion to launch the year's pranks early in disposing of a discarded television set on December 31 fell a bit short, though.
