Current Entry: Tomahawk Throwing
While "Ancient China" was the theme of Winter Camp XXXVI, Winter Camp was sufficiently flexible to accommodate other cultures in the program. On Day One, the ancient Chinese met up with Native America on the Tomahawk Throwing action course laid out in and around Beaver Creek and Brookside. Three teams set out from beneath the Welcome To Winter Camp banner strung across the road, each with a simple mission: through the use of thrown tomahawks, destroy approximately a dozen balloon interlopers. The tomahawks had uninflated balloons tied to them to aid in their recovery in the fallen snow, and it was through this foresight that no weapons were lost.
The Gang Green, advised by Mark Bollman-->, John Howey, and Geoff Brown, while adhering both to the spirit and letter of their Totin' Chip training, had some difficulty with a balloon they discovered in the cold waters of Beaver Creek. While it is well-known that a sheep is not a creature of the air, it is equally true, and a new discovery, that a tomahawk is not an aquatic weapon. The Gang took out all of their targets in 72 throws. More success was had by Team Nothing Rhymes With Orange, who made their way around the landscape with little apparent difficulty. Led by Alan Wilson and his four kills, and advised by Jeff Rand, NRWO put up a score of 69. The Yellow Fellows, advised by Doug Wilson, set out from the start to triumph over their competition, and when the course was completed, had proved their superior efficiency by dispatching their air-filled enemies in a mere 36 shots.
