This sport has never been played at Winter Camp as it was originally intended. When Dan Bollman suggested soccer for Winter Camp V, he proposed that the game be played on the ice of Beaver Lake. Weather conditions made this an unwise move, but a soccer game at the Ordeal site has been a highlight of fourteen Winter Camps; Winter Camp XXIV moved the game to Clearwater.
The play would never pass muster in a tightly-officiated league; borderline tackle play is more the rule than the exception. Many of Winter Camp's most noteworthy injuries can be traced to this game, although soccer has as yet caused no hospitalizations.
