Current Entry: Rocket Launch
Roger Horn was assigned model rocketry during the Winter Camp XX Hobby Draw, and he arrived at Winter Camp XXI with rockets for each participant. These were launched from the top of the Ordeal site, with technical assistance in the form of a second launch pad provided by the Hunt brothers. Tommy Lee's rocket could be seen on-site for months, as it got stuck some 20' up a tree near the bottom of the face. Adam Pezet holds the record for most launches, as his rocket took to the sky four times. However, the fourth launch blew a hole in the rocket's side, thus winning him "Best Challenger Imitation" honors as well. A second launch was conducted from Beaver Lake on the last day of camp, when Jeff Rand's deluxe Mercury rocket was fired.
At Winter Camp XLII, the rockets were built from 2-liter pop bottles and powered by compressed air. Doug and Alan Wilson enginerred the launch apparatus, and multiple bottles were launched on Day Five. The rockets were launched from in front of the Trout Lake building. Some campers experimented by placing various types of produce atop their rockets; one successful launch sent an apple to the bottom of the lake.
