Current Entry: Perimeter Hike
A simple idea, this Winter Camp I hike traced the boundary of D-A, attempting to stay within 30' of the fence line at all times. When it was repeated at Winter Camp XXI, the addition of the Frischkorn property to the Ranch had changed the northwestern boundary slightly, although the total length of the hike was unchanged. The Winter Camp web site previewed the return of this hike in 1997 by noting that "once every twenty years is just about the right frequency". With that in mind, the third incarnation of this hike was expected for Winter Camp XLI in 2017, but the hike was postponed until Winter Camp XLII in a precamp schedule change. The Ministry of Silly Walks announced this postponement in the precamp issue of the Winter Camp News, and apologized for the unexpected convenience.
The Perimeter Hike at Winter Camp XLII was the longest in camp history, due to the addition of the former Frischkorn property to D-A's northwest corner. It included a lunch served along the trail, sponsored and prepared by the People's Democratic Communist republic of North Australiastan.
On the setup day prior to Winter Camp XXVII, Roger Horn and Jeff Rand took an evening stroll from Beaver Creek, intending to hike to Cow Camp. Without any planning or supplies, and clearly with no sense of direction, the excursion ended up as a full-fledged perimeter hike.
