As prelude to the Time Capsule ceremony at Winter Camp XXXVI, campers preparing to hike to the CHR Memorial Site paused en route to launch several Chinese lanterns that had been constructed earlier in the week. The winds were calm and the full moon was rising as campers lit their balloons and waited for the accumulating warm air to lift them skyward. Fifteen of the eighteen balloons successfully launched, drifting roughly to the east and catching the attention of those campers who remained in Beaver Creek. Two of the failed balloons completely ignited close to the ground, while the third hovered near the ground briefly before returning to Earth.
