Encyclopedia WinterCampica - Hobby Draw
The Hobby Draw began at Winter Camp XVI as a scheme to extend Winter Camp's sphere of influence into the 360¼ lesser days of the Earth year. In the Hobby Draw, each Winter Camper proposes three new hobbies which he might wish to pursue in the following year-these are to be hobbies in which he is not currently active. After a brief presentation to the group in which he outlines the potential personal and Winter Camp benefits of each of his three selections, he leaves the room while a poll determines his hobby for the new year. Strictly speaking, the Winter Camp crew is not bound to select one of the three proposals, but since a movement to assign a write-in hobby was originally required to gain unanimous approval, most Arrowmen receive a hobby from their list of three. On the other hand, several Arrowmen have been assigned hobbies in absentia; some because they left camp before the Draw, some because they requested an assignment. The collective imagination of the group may be fully brought to bear on these people. At Winter Camp XXIII, the Draw was tied into Holiday Day as "New Year's Resolutions". The Draw returned at Winter Camp XXVII with a new twist. In an effort to encourage more completed hobbies, each camper was assigned a coach, another Arrowman who was to encourage him to complete his hobby during 2004.
