Encyclopedia WinterCampica - Heart-Stupid Breakfast
Winter Camp proved itself politically incorrect before that term became popular or even widely known. As a reaction to the "Heart-Smart" eating guidelines perpetrated by the American Heart Association in the mid-1980's, Winter Camp chose to run in the opposite direction. This meal theme was actually inspired by events at the 1988 Fall Ordeal when Wapaneu Chapter decided to serve heart-smart foods at camp. The most memorable meal was probably lunch: half a Tuna melt sandwich and a cup of something they claimed was soup. The two were dubbed pseudo-sushi and wacky won-ton. Wapaneu ran out of food at dinner that night and most Downriver Chapter members and candidates got nothing for dinner.
The Fall Hay Day found a very angry Downriver out to prove something, and the Heart-Stupid Breakfast was born when Brad Eakin and others whipped up Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, and Pancakes. Beginning in 1988 at Winter Camp XII, five Heart-Stupid Breakfasts have been served, the most recent at Winter Camp XXVIII. At Winter Camp XIV, the Fried Potatoes took on a curious silver color and proved almost indistinguishable from the aluminum pan used to prepare them.
