Encyclopedia WinterCampica - 4-Way Volleyball
On his album Playing With Your Head, comedian George Carlin described Volleyball as "Racketless team ping-pong played with an inflated ball and a raised net while standing on the table". One wonders what he would have said about Winter Camp's modifications of that game. Snow Volleyball had first been played at Winter Camp VIII, but a new spurt of creativity three years later inspired another unique-to-Winter-Camp athletic experience. Four teams take to the courts at once in this sport, where a pair of nets intersect at right angles to form four quadrants. Many traditional Volleyball rules are retained, but scoring is by elimination. As teams fail to return the ball over one of the nets, they amass points. The first team reaching 4, 8, and 12 points sets off a rotation of courts; when a team has notched 15 points, they are eliminated, and play continues with a dead quadrant. It has become traditional that the second match each year is played by teams organized by Scout rank: First Class and Star, Life, Eagle, and Eagle with Palms-which must frequently loan players to other ranks, as Winter Camp has a surfeit of Eagle Scouts with palms. For example, at Winter Camp XXVIII, when 4-Way Volleyball was included on the Independence Hike, realignment was necessary, and the "Eagles With More Than 3 Palms" team took the match.
The first 4-Way Volleyball match played at night took place at Winter Camp XV, tipping off at 4 A.M. WCST on December 31. Mark Bollman-->, Lee Gardy, Brian Mann, and Jeff Rand faced off as one-man teams. Mark--> took two games, while Jeff won the third. As part of a Hobby Draw assignment, Dave Woods constructed a full-size and well-crafted set of 4-Way Volleyball nets, which debuted at Winter Camp XXIV.
