Encyclopedia WinterCampica - Beef Fizz
While certain Winter Camp kitchen adventures have resulted in dangerous food, this is probably the only lethal beverage ever prepared at camp. Steve Donohue found it in a book of 7-Up recipes at Winter Camp VII and it was prepared as part of the Gruesome Snack. Mike Osvath drank heartily of this concoction of Beef bouillon, lemon juice, and 7-Up, and found himself sidelined with severe gastric distress.
In the beverage's return at Winter Camp XXXVI as part of the Carnivorous Lunch, the customary 7-Up was replaced by Vernors added to Beef bouillon and served with a slice of lemon. A merger of ginger and Beef might be quite reasonable in some Asian cooking, and appropriately so in the year of the Ancient China theme, but as a drink, this still left something to be desired. First to drink of the curious concoction that year were Steve and Kristie Donohue, who in some sense owe their marriage to Beef Fizz: it was Kristie's discovery of the Beef Fizz entry on the Winter Camp Web site i 1997 that led to her assuming the Occasional Visitor identity and cyberstalking Winter Camp before meeting and marrying Steve. Steve's indulgence represented his first taste of a carbonated beverage in 10 years. For er own part, Kristie simply noted that "That was so much better on the Web site than in real life!'. This recipe has been part of a single meal theme and was served once in 2012.
