Encyclopedia WinterCampica - Pirate Quest
The third Quest was held at Winter Camp XVIII and was a three-part activity. Original poetry was written for the event to guide two teams of Arrowmen throughout Beaver Creek in search of treasure. During this first stage, each team was tied together in a circle to simulate a pirate ship nearing shore. The first poem came with two endings, as each team was challenged to fill in the last line and determine their first goal:
'Twas long ago, in days of old
when D-A saw pirates bold.
They came here from their distant ship
hoping to give their foes the slip.
They adopted a rule; a manner strange:
Themselves in a loop they did arrange.
There was no trust, no brotherhood.
None cared for the common good.
They set their traps upon the trail
and they'll attack any who fail
to make themselves a well-bound loop
so use this rope to bind your group.
Now once you've looped as is your duty,
I have one clue to find their booty.
Alternate ending #1:
A mighty tree whose nuts squirrels coax
You'll find more clues at __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __.
Alternate ending #2:
You should go seek their treasure chest;
you'll find more clues up at __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __.
Whether the team wound up at Treasure Oak[s] or Woodcrest, the second stage saw them re-form into a bound line to imitate the crew boarding longboats for the trip to shore. Again, original poetry, found at the site, posed a puzzle to be solved.
By now you've learned about your group
at least enough to lose the loop.
My treasure's buried where scoundrels burn,
but to get there you'll have to learn
a secret path, a hidden trail,
for crossing the dam will make you fail.
Let me repeat that little hook:
You may not cross the dam or babbling brook.
Undo the rope but retain the line
for this trail you go one at a time.
So now in a single file you must walk
as you head for your goal: the famed __ __ __ __ __ __ __.
The final stage required that the two teams transport one of two 150-pound treasure rocks from the CAG Rock back to the BC building:
The treasure's here and it's unburied
but now I fear it must be carried.
Use your rope to transport it
then head to BC lickety-split.
The first one back will win the prize:
They'll get to laugh at the other guys. The evenly-matched teams were close together throughout the last stage, which coincidentally saw a rainbow appear above the treasure site as they arrived. Dave Woods carried the Pirate Theme a further step when he found a skull and crossbones -- from a deer -- during the hike.
