Encyclopedia WinterCampica - RC Maze

The RC (short for remote control) Maze, held near CAG Rock at Winter Camp XXXIX, featured one blindfolded Winter Camp participant working his way through a course while being directed by a sighted participant. Participants took turns being the navigated and the navigator.

The event was scored based on the amount of time it took to go through the course, as measured by a referee. Additional time penalties were assessed if participants stepped out of the course (10 seconds) or hit an obstacle (30 seconds). The course was laid out by twine that was tied to stakes or trees in the field. It also went over a dock piece which was found in the field where the game was played.

The initial design of the course had three obstacles: a stack of three milk jugs, two snow shovels leaning against each other, and a puddle. After the first group went through the course, it was shortened to allow for quicker gameplay. At that time, the puddle was removed. The other two obstacles remained. The navigator was required to stand in an area which was identified with twine tied to three stakes.

The RC Maze and Blind Volleyball activities were held simultaneously. Participants were split into three groups. While one group's members worked through the RC Maze, the other two groups played Blind Volleyball. (ER)
