Encyclopedia WinterCampica - Quest for the Grail
On Day Two of Winter Camp XLI, Alan Wilson's famous black boxes made their second appearance as part of The Quest for the Grail: a 21st-century orienteering contest with a twist in recognition of the Monty Python theme. Three teams took to the snow in search of five objective targets, with only their mysterious box and a set number of credits to guide them. Players could invest credits for information about their location, either their distance from their target or the direction. Investing more credits could get both of those numbers, but at great cost to economical gameplay.
The final standings saw the Red Rockers complete their course (to Forester campsite) using only 15 credits, while the Yellow Fellows used 28 and the Gang Green needed 36. The time standings showed a different order, with Yellow's time of 57 minutes winning out over Red's 69 minutes and Green's 75. After consultation with rules official Alan Wilson, elapsed time was used as a tiebreaker, giving the Yellow Fellows the victory.
The Grails after which the teams were questing were "dribble Grails", 3-D printed by Alan with an intentional, though suboptimal, second exit route.
