Encyclopedia WinterCampica - Encyclopedia WinterCampica
Mathematician Farkas Bolyai stated in the early 19th century that
It seems to be true that many things have, as it were, an epoch in which they are discovered in several places simultaneously, just as the violets appear on all sides in springtime.
While he was speaking of non-Euclidean geometry, his words were no less applicable to the emergence of this comprehensive Winter Camp reference work. In the fall of 1997, Steve Donohue was pondering the establishment of an online Winter Camp dictionary while Mark Bollman--> was 200 miles away composing a print version of the Encyclopedia. Their paths converged via email, and the first on-line version of EWC was posted soon after the Winter Camp XXI Planning Meeting. A print version was put into limited release at Winter Camp XXI, and an ongoing revision process from the Winter Camp web site assures that the directory is kept up to date. The Yottapedia, a home for longer essays on the Winter Camp way of life which includes many articles originally from the Winter Camp Almanac and Book of Facts, premiered with the 5th edition in 2001, which was also the first one bound. EWC served as the Mi-Gi-Si O-Paw-Gan entry in the Lodge History contest at the 2002 National Order of the Arrow Conference.
