Encyclopedia WinterCampica - Squaw Point
At Winter Camp XVI's Planning Meeting, Jeff Rand proposed that the Beaver Lake peninsula be renamed "Squaw Point" as a challenge to a recent Minnesota law banning the use of the word "squaw" in place names. For reasons unclear, the idea was reactivated for Winter Camp XXV as part of a project to place permanent signs at points in D-A of particular significance to Winter Camp. Six signs were prepared to match "official" camp signs as closely as possible, and five of them were raised on Day Five. As a result, Squaw Point, CAG Rock, The Face, Cross-Country Golf Course-Par 62, and Herculean Point (a point on the Pedro Trail noted for a feat of strength earlier in 2001) were labeled at the end of camp. A sign was prepared for "Big Pine" as mentioned in Another Ten Seconds, but it was left unraised when Jeff Rand, who knew where the sign was to go, left camp early on Day Five. The sign was installed at Winter Camp XXVI and remained as a navigation aid for future Winter Campers for several years.
